Open Source, but why?
In the realm of digital Infrastructure, Open Source is the beacon that illuminates innovation, fostering a universe where progress is shared, not owned. Before why, let's understand what is Open Source.
Methodology
Open source is development methodology. It's a method to develop and distribute software, but also set of best practices to make software and build teams that make software.
Movement
Open Source is a movement; based on ideals and philosophy beyond only code. It's rooted in belief that software has an impact greater than any one of us and certain freedoms should be protected.
Culture
Beyond a methodology and a movement, It's a collection of people, values, and ideas that take the form of software projects and communities.
A quick search engine gives us the following definition:
Open Source ˈōpən sôrs/ (adj): Open source software is software that can be freely used, modified, and shared (in both modified and unmodified form) by anyone.
Open Source Initiative, steward of Open Source Definition define it in 10 points that I would recommend reading. If I had to derive a simpler version of it (not that it needs it), every open source (or content, hardware, research, AI, etc).. must come with 4 fundamental freedom.
- Freedom to Run, in anyway the consumer see fit.
- Freedom to Read, the source
- Freedom to Remix, it with new innovation/changes
- Freedom to Redistribute, the remix.
.. but, why?
Open source isn't just a development model; it's a testament to human potential, proving that collaboration can propel us further than competition. The magic lies in its ability to turn a solitary idea into a symphony of creation, composed by the many, for the many. Open Source enables Stablity, Control, Training and Security better than the proprietary counter part especially in long run.
The Big Picture
If I paint a picture of Open Source empowered world, it is a world devoid of barriers, where knowledge flows freely like a river, nourishing innovation at every bend. It's the lifeblood of progress, pulsing with transparency, collaboration, and a shared commitment to the collective good. If knowledge is power, then open source is the ultimate democracy, redistributing this power to those who dare to learn, contribute, and innovate.
